Object Description

A Fine Pair of Patinated Bronze Figural Torchères

Each torchère is finely modelled and cast in the form of an expressive putti figure holding aloft a pair of ribbon tied torches. The figures stand on naturalistic rocky bases, resting against tree stumps. They are raised on red marble plinths with gilt-bronze bands.

Object History

These fine torcheres were formerly housed at Killeen House, Co. Galway, Ireland.

Built in the early 1840s, Killeen House, originally known as New Park, was purchased by the prominent Irish Comyn family in 1849. The Family roots can be traced back to Robert of Comyn, a noble who accompanied William the Conquerer in 1066, and who was subsequently made Earl of Northumberland. The house commands an impressive site situated on the edge of Lough Corrib in County Galway, Ireland’s second largest lake.
