Object Description
A pair of Regency bergère library armchairs, in the style of Gillows of Lancaster and London. With salmon faux suede buttonned squab cushions.
Why we like them
Arguably the most comfortable model of armchair ever created. The caned, wrap-around backrests provide useful support for the back, but also lend more presence to these chairs. The finely reeded front legs, the boldly splayed back legs and the flowing design of the armrests are the signature features of the Gillow firm.
The Gillows firm produced this comfortable and popular model of ‘curricle’ bergère in various timbers and with various form of decoration.
For a related pair with slightly different backs see Christie’s London, 22 May 2014, lot 1229.
