Object Description

Pair of 1803 & 1804 Samplers by Ann Allbery. Framed in modern wood frames with gilt slip and glass. Fixed with sticky tape around the extreme edges only, with chipboard backing. The samplers are worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border, and simple embroidered border. Colours red, cream, blue, gold, green and light brown. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-13. Inscriptions read, ‘LEARN to esteem Life as thou>oughtest; then art thou near the>Pinnacle of Wisdom.’ ‘Happy and joyous hours are often quickly followed by amazing vexations’. ‘Custom makes things quite easy.’. And ‘Lying lips are an abmination to the>LORD, but they that deal truly>are his delight.’. ‘Fear the LORD all the Days of>thy Life, and walk in the Paths which>he hath opened before thee’. Signed and dated ‘ANN ALLBERY.1803.’ and ‘ANN ALLBERY.Rudgwick SUSSEX.September 1804.’. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including birds, flowers, trees, potted flowering plants and stags.

Object Condition

Generally Good. A number of small holes to both. Minor stitch losses to the verse and one motif (1804). Stretching is slightly uneven (1804). Frame showing some wear and is weak in one or more of the corners, but in our opinion still sturdy enough to hang.
