Object Description

Pair of Staffordshire figures with a maritime theme which feature a sailor and his lass, stood on a shaped base. Dull gilt base line and embellishment. Decorated mainly to the front. Vent hole to the reverse. This piece represents an actress and the actor Mr T. P. Cooke playing the role of the sailor, Ben Backstay. Book reference,’Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875′ Book 1, by A.& N. Harding, page 303, figure 1108.

Object Condition

Sailor: Good. No restoration. Very minor paint losses to anchor and bow on hat. Wear to his trousers and base. Rubbing to gilt. KILN EFFECTS: flecks of stray coloured glaze to the reverse and to his face. Lass: Good. No restoration. Tight hairline to reverse of her waist. Some rubbing to gilt. Wear to her skirt. KILN EFFECTS: kiln detritus caught in the glaze to her right arm; tiny glaze pops to her sash; flecks of stray coloured glaze to her arms, neck and to the reverse.
