Object Description

Pair of Staffordshire figures with a military theme which feature two generals each holding a flag, seated on horseback. The pieces are titled, ”G. BROWN’ and ‘GNL SIMPSON” to the fronts. Dull gilt titles and embellishment. These represent Sir James Simpson (1792-1868) served with the Grenadier Guards during the Peninsular War of 1812-1813. Sir Brown George (1790-1865) served in Peninsular War of 1851 and was awarded a knighthood. Book reference ,’Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875’ Book 1, by A.& N. Harding, page 131, figure 329.

Object Condition

Brown: Good. Two chips to lower base edge, at the back. KILN EFFECTS: notable crazing and some craze lines. RESTORATION. Retouched paint loss to his hat, hair and shoe. Simpson: Good. A few minor paint losses. KILN EFFECTS: firing crack to the horse’s chest. RESTORATION. Top third of flag reglued and join retouched.
