Object Description

‘Partal Doorway, Alhambra Palace, Granada’ by García y Rodríguez
Spanish, circa 1890, Late 19th Century
Canvas: Height 40 cm, Width 50 cm, Depth 2 cm
Frame: Height 50 cm, Width 59 cm, Depth 4 cm

This atmospheric oil on canvas portrays a sunlit courtyard scene at the Alhambra in Granada, viewed through the ornate Moorish doorway of the Partal Chapel. The architecture is defined by a finely worked horseshoe arch, richly decorated with stucco reliefs and intricate geometric tilework, set against warm pink-toned walls illuminated by the intense light of southern Spain.

In the foreground, a circular fountain basin sits within the courtyard, surrounded by potted plants and flowering oleanders that soften the architectural setting. To the right, a young girl in a white dress stands quietly within the scene, adding a subtle human presence that enhances the sense of scale and stillness. On the left, a balustraded terrace opens outward toward a distant Andalusian landscape of rolling hills, cypress trees, and scattered white villages beneath a softly clouded sky.

The composition is built with careful spatial layering, guiding the viewer from the intimate courtyard details into the open landscape beyond. García y Rodríguez employs a warm, luminous palette and fluid brushwork, combining precise architectural rendering with a more atmospheric handling of light and vegetation, characteristic of his mature style.
Signed “Garcia y Rodriguez” (lower left), oil on canvas.
Manuel García y Rodríguez (1863–1925) trained in Seville at the Escuela de Bellas Artes under Eduardo Cano, Manuel Ussel de Guimbarda, and Emilio Sánchez Perrier. He gained early acclaim at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in the late 19th century and exhibited internationally in Paris (1889) and Chicago (1893). Celebrated for his evocative depictions of Andalusian architecture and landscape, his works are now represented in important museum collections, including the Carmen Thyssen Museum.
