Object Description
This patinated bronze sculpture, by the French sculptor Ernest Justin Ferrand, features a female winged figure holding a quill pen and an unfurled scroll of paper. She stands naturalistically, her posture in a classical contrapposto, upon a red marble and patinated bronze base. The base is mounted with a bronze plaque that features a quote from Pascal’s Pensées, which reads, in French, “L’HOMME EST VISIBLEMENT FAIT POUR PENSER; C’EST TOUTE SA DIGNITÉ ET TOUT SON MÉRITE”. The sculpture is signed ‘Ferrand’ on the bronze base.
