Object Description
Persian handwoven woollen Qom carpet
Persian, 20th Century
Height 203cm, width 74cm
Emerging from the internationally esteemed carpet-making territory of Qom, Iran, this runner or rug was deftly handwoven in wool.
The rug’s primary focus lies in its centre panel, showcasing an alluring and non-traditional design. Drawing inspiration from the age-old Persian ‘tree of life’, which ties the idea of vibrant trees with the safeguarding of life, the central section portrays four trees, each unique, akin to a picturesque landscape. Emulating Persian rugs’ customary stylized aesthetics, each tree is distinct in its detailing and design, adorned with richly detailed motifs of foliage and flowers.
A collection of further embellishments encircles these trees, all reminiscent of the ‘tree of life’ theme, including animals such as deer and birds, foliage, and flowers that mirror the style of the trees. These designs are rendered in earthy hues of red, beige, cream, green, and deep blue, presenting a captivating contrast against the panel’s tranquil sky-blue backdrop.
Encompassing the central panel is a rectangular border comprising a balanced ensemble of five frieze designs, with the largest one taking centre stage against a ruby-red backdrop. It features traditional floral stylized sequenced motifs such as botehs and rosettes. The carpet’s edges are adorned with short, cream fringes at either end.
With its intriguing design and extended form, this rug is perfectly suited to add a touch of warmth and decorative flair to hallways, corridors, or any other fitting indoor setting.
