Object Description
Persian woven silk flower motif Qum carpet
Persian, 20th Century
Height 131cm, width 79cm
Originating from the city of Qum, this splendid Persian silk carpet embodies the finesse of Persian artisans. Its delicate, compact weave instantly speaks to the luxurious silk from which it was skillfully woven, and the carpet’s elaborate patterns reverberate with the echo of age-old carpet-making legacies.
At the heart of the carpet lies a captivating medallion, where a geometrically harmonious rosette takes center stage. This is encircled by an artful ensemble of petite peonies, whose allure is magnified by their intricate rendering. Radiating from this focal point are outward-pointing palmettes, orchestrating a harmonious, concentric layout. The rest of the carpet’s central expanse unveils a mesmerizing ballet of motifs: boteh, pomegranate, rosette, and palmette, all seamlessly weaving together, caressed by stylized leaves and intertwining tendrils. Nestled within the carpet’s corners, the iris motifs flourish, exuding the elegance of calligraphic strokes.
This centerpiece is ensconced within a generous border where palmettes, in a rhythmic mirrored sequence, evoke subtle parallels to European Art Deco designs. This mainstay is flanked by svelte friezes, drawing cues from the iconic “running water” motif.
The color narrative is one of understated beauty. Subdued blues blend effortlessly with gentle creams and rich maroons, all set harmoniously against the central panel’s inviting cream canvas. In essence, this Qum Persian silk carpet is a wonderful decorative piece and a showcase of excellent technique.
