Object Description

Persian woven wool flower motif Tabriz carpet
Persian, Early 20th Century
Length 388cm, width 285cm

This expansive Persian rug is an artisanal masterpiece, delicately hand-knitted in wool by the weavers of Tabriz, a city in the province of East Azerbaijan, celebrated for its expert rug making.

The Tabriz rug boasts complex patterns inspired by flowers and traditional Persian design elements, forming an alluring canvas.

The rug’s elaborate design adheres to the Herati style, showcasing recurring patterns of floral medallions, nestled centrally within a diamond-shaped geometrical construction, flanked by scrolling foliage on its side. These striking embellishments are woven in a diverse array of colours within the traditional Tabriz palette, in hues of ivory, ruby, and deep ocean blue, highlighted with softer tints of cerulean and apricot. The blend of these shades, derived from natural pigments, orchestrates a bold yet harmonious visual spectacle.

In keeping with Persian tradition, the rug is edged with multiple concentric borders featuring ornate floral friezes. The initial border is in light green, succeeded by a slender frieze adorned with floral patterns in red and blue. The following, broader, frame showcases a pattern of pomegranate motifs linked by stems in varying shades of blue.

The absence in this carpet of a strict architectural construction paves the way for a hearty warmth, allowing the decorative elements to steal the viewer’s focus, providing endless charm in their intricacies. This piece makes a warm addition to any dwelling.
