Object Description

Philip Webb for Morris & Co.

An extremely rare Arts and Crafts Aesthetic Movement Ebonised Settee with pineapple finials and scollop style carved details to the top head rail. The upper sides curve out beautifully uniting to the arms at the back. The arms curve up slightly with bobbin-style details running down and further bobbin details to the legs, front, sides, and side stretchers.

Professionally re-upholstered in period-style fabric.

This settee was designed to compliment the famous bobbin-turned adjustable reclining armchairs, designed by Philip Webb for Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. Those elegant timeless recliners were based on a design from an earlier traditional prototype found in the workshop of an old carpenter named Ephraim Colman in Herstmonceux, East Sussex. UK by George Warrington Taylor in 1866 the business manager at that time for Morris Marshall, Faulkner & Co. He drew a sketch and wrote a description of the chair and sent it to Philip Webb who adapted it for production by Morris, Marshall, and Faulkner 1861-1875 and in turn designed this settee to compliment the armchairs.

A rare Morris and Co day bed also designed by Philip Webb from the same suite sold at Christie’s Auction House London (sale number 1115) for GBP 30,000 on 1st May 2013.
