Object Description
Oil painting by Amy Millar Watt (1900–1957) When I first saw this my immediate thought was ‘Downton’. A portrait of a wonderful 1920s lady, looking thoughtfully to her right, affecting a slightly melancholic air, that I expect she imagines gives her ‘depth’. She is rather lovely in that vulner able costume drama manner, and although seemingly unfin ished, the like ness is fully resolved where it counts. A graduate of St Martin’s, Amy the artist went into advertising (plus ça change) and retired with her cartoonist husband to Dedham. There they became close friends and sketching companions of Munnings.
