Object Description

An engraving entitled Pride and Exaltation in a Sedan Chair by Isaac Cruikshank.

The print, numbered Plate 84 to the top left corner, is one of 100 from George Moutard Woodward’s book ‘Eccentric Excursions, or, Literary & Pictorial Sketches of Countenance, Character & Country, in different parts of England & South Wales’. The book poked fun at the different parts of the two countries and the types of people who lived there.

This print shows an elderly lady being carried in a Sedan along The High Pavement, a street in the Lace Market area of Nottingham. Her pompous Footman leads the way carrying a flambeau, an ornamental torch used for important processions etc. He is dressed in his finery and revels in the attention of clearing the way for his mistress as if she is a lady of great importance.

Published by Allen & Co. of 15 Paternoster Row London on April 1 1797.
