Object Description

An interesting little silver counter box from the reign of Queen Anne. Small size. It contains four embossed gaming counter/medalettes. The pull off cover has a bead border and is embossed with a portrait bust of Queen Anne between “Q and A”.

Weight 8g.
Diameter 2.3cm, 0.9ins. Height 1cm, 0.39ins.
Maker Thomas Kedder, a known box maker of the period.
Circa 1710.
Unmarked silver.

Marks. Stamped with maker’s mark only below the base.

Maker: Thomas Kedder

Thomas Kedder (Kidder), London silversmith working during the 1680-1720 period. His mark is found on many counter boxes and nutmeg graters.

Object Literature

Counter boxes contained a number of disks, commonly stamped or engraved with portraits of English monarchs, that were used as game markers and counting devices. Counter boxes were rarely marked.

Object Condition

The little box is in good condition with some wear consistent with age. The four counters have differences in decoration.
