Queen Anne Antique Silver Counter Box, England Circa 1710.

Object Description

An interesting little silver counter box from the reign of Queen Anne. Small size. The pull off cover has a bead border and is embossed with a portrait bust of Queen Anne between “Q and A”. The box contains two silver threepenny pieces dated 1905 and 1932.

Maker Thomas Kedder, a known box maker of the period.

Marks. Stamped with maker’s mark only below the base. Owner’s initials to the base.

Thomas Kedder (Kidder), London silversmith working during the 1680-1720 period. His mark is found on many counter boxes and nutmeg graters.

Object Literature

Counter boxes contained a number of disks, commonly stamped or engraved with portraits of English monarchs, that were used as game markers and counting devices. Counter boxes were rarely marked.

A 1905 silver threepence is a Sterling (.925) silver coin from King Edward VII’s reign, featuring his portrait. A 1932 silver threepence is a 50% Sterling (.925) silver coin featuring King George V’s head.

Object Condition

The little box is in very good condition, the definition is fine, just a bit of wear and scuffing compatible with age. The 3d pieces are quite worn.
