Object Description

A charming little silver counter box from the reign of Queen Anne. Small size, could be used as a pill box. The pull off cover has a bead border and is embossed with a portrait bust of Queen Anne between “A and R” for Anna Regina.

Weight 5g.
Diameter 2.3cm, 0.9ins. Height 1cm, 0.39ins.
Maker “IA”, probably for John Albright.
London circa 1705.
Unmarked silver.

Marks. Stamped with maker’s mark only below the base. Owner’s initials to the base.

Maker: Thomas Kedder

Thomas Kedder (Kidder), London silversmith working during the 1680-1720 period. His mark is found on many counter boxes and nutmeg graters.

Object Literature

Counter boxes contained a number of disks, commonly stamped or engraved with portraits of English monarchs, that were used as game markers and counting devices. Counter boxes were rarely marked.

Object Condition

In very good condition with minimal signs of wear commensurate with age. There’s a small dent to the base.
