Object Description

This rare antique Agra carpet hails from around 1880 and at over 140 years old, the design and colours are really beautiful.  With a rare sandy to biscuit toned border, the flower design is amazingly well proportioned and executed.  The pale pinks, lilacs and gold dyes work incredibly well on the border.  The rare ivory to greyish toned main background compliments the purples, pinks and lilac toned floral palmettes.  The hints of orange that can be seen in the leaves work very well too.  A rare and divine early carpet from the magnificent weaving city of Agra.

Object Literature

The Indian city of Agra in the late 19th century was an area where carpet weaving began to excel, as carpets and rugs were commissioned for the western market. Persian designs were used, but like famous Ziegler carpets the designs were generally enlarged to show beautiful floral palmettes, leaves and vines with mainly deep reds, purples, greens and ivory/grey tones as the predominant colours.
