Object Description

An exceptional and rare antique Bakshaish carpet with an unusual all over repeating shield design, a classic flower and leaf border design and a stunning palette of natural dyes. Excellent condition with a good wool pile condition, a couple of small old repairs which have been done well.  These tribal carpets from Bakhshayesh in the Heris district have often used scattered tribal designs, usually variations of floral motifs, as well as large medallions too.  A quite spectacular design and condition, one of the best early ones we have seen in over 30 years.

The weavers in Bakshaish, north Persia used the influences of tribal weavers from the Caucasian villages in their designs.  These rustic carpets are often a very similar in colour to that of neighbouring Heriz and Serapi carpets and rugs.  The early pieces such as this will always have more muted dyes purely down to their age, the natural yellows and variety of rust reds are only seen in carpets of this vintage.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire, the UK & Europe by appointment.  We love to travel, and have been doing so since the early 90’s having visited customers in all over the UK, Scotland, Ireland, France and Belgium helping find the perfect antique or contemporary carpet for their home.  Please request a home visit to view this remarkable early Baskshaish carpet in-situ.
