Object Description
A rare all over design small size antique Heriz carpet, woven in the late 19th century and in lovely original condition. Finding these small size carpets from the Heriz region are increasingly difficult, as this was a size rarely woven and they are always sought after. Wonderful rich colours using varying tomato reds, brick reds, soft blues and greens. Over 120 years the dyes oxidise and change differently from one and another, hence you see this unique characteristic of dye change in antique pieces, and subtle changes of reds in the main background.
A rare all over field design too, consisting of the famous early ‘Harshang’ design, often known as the Crab design too, less obvious in the Harshang format, a more abstract version of a Crab in our opinion. The Crab design is more-often seen in Caucasian rugs from Azerbaijan and in particular the main border.
In very good order, a wonderful soft wool pile throughout and no losses to the borders at either end, a beautiful decorative antique carpet full of charm and warmth.
