Object Description

Rare Antique Veramin Carpet, c. 1890s
5.44 x 3.08 m

Antique Veramin carpets are widely recognized as among the most exceptional Persian workshop weavings, best known for their remarkable quality, fine crisp drawings, wide variety of rich vegetable-dyed colours, and a range of characteristic designs that set these carpets apart from those from the neighboring regions.

This fine Nineteenth Century example employs a rare, terracotta field, as opposed to the conventional deep blue, which serves as a warm and charming backdrop to the variety of vegetable dyes colours in its design, including shades of ivory, cornflower blue, and sage green, framed by a wide, decorative border. The charming all-over pomegranate blossom design is derived from earlier Azerbaijani rugs of the 18th entury and symbolizes prosperity, fertility, and longevity.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, this carpet maintains its original outer borders on all sides – remarkable for a piece of this age.

An attractive carpet, rare in this large format, with an understated grace that would lend itself well to any setting.
