Rare Antique Ziegler carpet

Object Description

A truly stunning and remarkable early production antique Ziegler carpet woven in Sultanabad, Persia – dating from 1883 to 1890 with a rare golden yellow background.  The design is breathtakingly beautiful, well proportioned and with exquisite scrolling vines and floral motifs, and lovely symmetry too.  The 130 year old colour palette has faded yet retained amazing colour, with sage greens, teal pale blues and deep reds and indigo blues.

This Ziegler is undoubtedly one of the best we have seen in 30 years, the scale of drawing and dyes are majestic and exactly what is looked for in the best Ziegler & Co workshop carpets.  A rare and outstanding example in excellent original order. Very minimal wear, the majority of the carpet has a good soft pile.  Professionally washed and small preservation has been done by ourselves to maintain its beauty.

Object Literature

In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with beautiful, all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

Ziegler & co workshop carpets have always been revered and desired by collectors and designers alike.  Ziegler rugs developed an almost immediate following in the late 19th Century, especially among early collectors which included the Guinness family, who laid them in Elveden Hall, their Suffolk estate. Ziegler carpets are one of the only types of Persian carpet which were influenced by western designs and have become one of the most sought after carpets in the world today.

Object Condition

A rare and outstanding example in excellent original order. Very minimal wear, the majority of the carpet has a good soft pile.  Professionally washed and small preservation has been done by ourselves to maintain its beauty.
