Object Description
A rare middle of the 19th century French barometer by Bourdon & Richard on a metal stand.
The mechanism of the aneroid barometer was designed by Eugene Bourdon (1808-1884) and is fitted with his characteristic crescent-shaped flat vacuum tube.
These barometers were produced by Felix Richard under license and won awards at the Paris Exposition of 1849 and the London Great Exhibition in 1851 (both mentioned on the dial).
The interior of the barometer is stamped “Bourdon & Richard 11028” and “Brevetes A Paris” (meaning Patented in Paris).
The barometer rests on a metal stand that has a pair of mythical winged crane like birds supporting the barometer on a shaped plinth base.
