Object Description
Ca. 400 BC
A very rare example of a Daunian krater with elegant donkey-head protomes. This unique vessel features a short, globular body that tapers into a funnel-shaped neck and wide, flaring rim. Twin loop handles are attached to the shoulder, and between each handle sits a vertical zoomorphic protome in the form of a donkey head, each with an impressive pair of horns. The body, including the inside of the funnel and handles, is decorated with red and brown encircling bands, panels, and a single band of diamonds adorned with brown hatching. The handles and zoomorphic heads are also framed by brown vertical bands and swirling circular designs. Some repairs, one on a protome; on the body an ancient restoration: a crack surrounded by small holes. For a similar type, see The Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, Inventory number T.687.
