A Stunning Chippendale Period, Georgian 18th Century Mahogany Serpentine Chest, Of Exceptionally Rare Very Small Proportions, Having Well Figured Shaped Top With Moulded Edge, Over Boldly Shaped Front With Five Well Figured Drawers, Retaining Original Decorated Brass Swan Neck Handles, Flanked By Canted Corners To Each Side, Raised On Original Shaped Bracket Feet.
This serpentine chest is incredibly rare and incredibly charming. We have never come across a Georgian Serpentine Chest like this that is SO small without some kind of later adaption. This chest is totally untouched and the same proportions as the day it was made, which makes it very unusual indeed.
It is constructed from very good quality mahogany timbers and has clearly been made in one of the top London workshops of the 18th century. It is interesting to note that the underside of the bottom features the red wash which Thomas Chippendale famously used on the underside of most of the furniture he produced and was then widely adopted by the other top London cabinet makers of the time.
The chest retains a good rich colour and of course because of the dimensions it boasts real elegance and charm. It also retains its original brass handles and its original shaped bracket feet, another good feature.
This is a really rare piece of 18th century furniture which would grace any good collection, but alternatively it does of course boast incredible function and can be used in the home alongside a bed, or possibly even as an occasional type lamp table or similar.
As with all objects which we offer for sale this small georgian serpentine chest of drawers has been inspected and attended to in their workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is in the very best condition possible before being offered for sale and therefore it is ready for immediate placement within the home.
