Object Description

A very rare mid 19th century (circa 1850) finely carved Ceylonese ebony elephant from the Galle district of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon).

This wonderful elephant is depicted walking holding a trunk of vine leaves and grapes in his trunk, all draped over his back, his tusks, eyes and toes of bone.

The Galle district, an area in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was renowned in the 19th century for the production of superbly carved items particularly made of ebony.

This elephant is in very good condition for age and can go straight into a home.
