Object Description

Rare Orientalist gilt bronze mantel clock by Denière et Fils
French, c. 1830
Height 54cm, width 40cm, depth 18cm

This beautiful mantel clock is crafted from gilt bronze in the Orientalist style. The piece was produced during the period of Charles X, making it an especially early example of French Orientalist design. The clock features a rectangular base supporting a rectangular plinth-form clock case, the case inset with a circular silvered dial. The base and case are moulded with a variety of classicising motifs, including a Running Dog frieze about the bottom of the base. Most remarkably, the base supports a full-length figure of a standing Turkish woman, her dress and garb decidedly Orientalist. A lamp and rug rest atop the case, while a musical instrument is propped against the opposite side. The quality of the gilt bronze detailing is especially fine, as is expected of the maker: Denière et Fils.
