Object Description

An Important and Rare Pair of George III Carved Giltwood Mirrors
England, Circa 1760-1770

A fine and rare pair of George III period giltwood mirrors in the Chippendale style at its most refined. Each with mercury plate set within an elaborately carved frame, enriched with scrolling acanthus, floral swags, and rocaille motifs. The pierced cresting, with interlaced C-scrolls and asymmetrical flourishes, reflects the Rococo influence seen in Chippendale’s Director.

The quality of the carving is particularly noteworthy, with crisp detailing and a lively sense of movement throughout. These mirrors would have been a significant commission, likely intended for a grand interior. Pairs of mirrors from the period are increasingly scarce, making them a remarkable survival from the period.
