Object Description

A rare set of the four seasons carved Carrara marble statues. This wonderful foursome are a take on the original four seasons. Autumn, spring, winter, summer (as pictured), are all represented through the action or clothing of each statue, as in Italian tradition.

Dating to the early 18th century, these Italian carved marble figures were intended for garden use and would make a stunning centrepiece for a courtyard or garden, but they could also look beautiful inside a home. Their scale and style are a rare find, with most other versions being of small children, made from stone, or made in more recent years.

Four seasons

The Four Seasons are seen in ancient Greek mythology as the figures in charge of the four seasons of mankind. In ancient Rome, the four seasons were portrayed by the Horae, Greco-Roman goddesses of the seasons, natural order, and have sacred significance.

Each season is characterised by a meaningful figure or statue that bears traditional identifiable symbols. The popularity of these figures peaked during the Roman period and again during the Renaissance.
