Object Description

A rare set of six mid 19th century (circa 1840) yew wood low back Windsor chairs of superb patina, probably from the Thames Valley region.

This set of chairs consist of a hoop back with scribed edge and central pierced splat with unusual finely turned roundel design to the centre, turned spindles to either side leading down to well figured and lovely mellowed solid elm seats.

The chairs are supported by turned legs to the front and back, joined by a turned H stretcher.

The majority of chairs of this design of chair are known as ‘wheelback’ low back Windsor chairs as they have a central ‘wheel’ design but this set are very unusual as the central circular design consists of a finely turned roundel.

Reference: A photograph of a similar chair with a turned roundel to the centre can be found in the book ‘The English Regional Chair’ by Bernard D. Cotton, page 60.

This set of chairs are in very good condition for age, are of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
