Object Description

A rare, superb quality late 19th century (circa 1890) Anglo Indian circular hardwood inlaid occasional table from the Hoshiarpur area in the Punjab, this area renowned for superb intricate inlay work.

This table consists of a superbly inlaid circular top with inlaid foliate decoration to the centre surrounded by a foliate bone border, this leading out to a section of inlaid foliate decoration with outer borders of bone stringing, inlaid foliate and quatrefoil designs.

The leads down to a moulded edge with inlaid bone and ebony chevron design and a shaped and foliate inlaid frieze below.

The table is supported by an elegant turned column with inlaid foliate and geometric decoration leading down to an inlaid tripod base consisting of three cabriole legs.

This table is typical of the superb inlaid designs from the Hoshiarpur region of India in the late 19th century, this area produced fine quality furniture with intricate inlaid designs – the area was renowned for making high quality inlaid items and pieces were exhibited at various local exhibitions in the late 19th century.

Many items were exported to Bombay and Calcutta and increasingly to London, England and records from the early 20th century state that ship loads of such items were exported to both Europe and America.

This table is in excellent original condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
