Godwin Tiles

Though William Godwin began manufacturing quarry tiles, bricks and drainpipes at his factory in Lugwardine, Herefordshire in 1851, it wasn’t until 1852 that the firm began making encaustic floor tiles. Based on medieval prototypes, the tiles proved extremely popular and the business opened a second factory at Withington in 1863. In later years, William went into partnership with his son and traded as ‘Godwin & Co’, a name that would become reputable until long after William’s death in 1925.
