Object Description

A mahogany, Regency Naval Chair.

Most Naval Chairs tend to be late 18th Century in date but this example is an exception and shows that the design was still in use well into the 19th Century. Good design lasts and in fact, in the past, we had an Anglo Indian Art Deco set which folded on the same design principal.

As can be seen, the caned seat lifts up against the back and the legs are hinged so the front ones concertina flat against the back legs. Although the height and width of the chair remain the same, the depth is greatly reduced in a quick and easy movement, making the design suitable for naval use where speed of clearing the decks for the guns is an important factor.

The back is decorated with moulding to the uprights and the X splate with a small patrae. Inlaid ebony has also been used to decorate the back’s horizontal bars. A good looking Naval chair that stands out for its extra decoration. Circa 1825.
