(Sofa Tables were relatively common throughout the 19th century from
the Regency period onwards and as the name suggests they were
originally designed to sit behind a sofa, although a common misconception
is that they were meant to butt up to the sofa. They were actually normally
designed to sit a few feet away from the sofa, hence the false drawers on
reverse. That said they also look quite happy pushed right up against the
back of a sofa and are such useful, versatile items of furniture. This particular
example is of exceptional quality and the best elegant design. Clearly made in
a top London cabinet makers workshop, the rosewood veneers are of the
highest grade, it has yew wood crossbanding and brass inlaid decoration. It
also has cedar wood lined drawers. All of these featured combined are something
which only the very best of workshops would be able to afford to put in place)
