(It’s difficult to know where to start in terms of finding
the superlatives to describe the look, feel and overall quality
of this beautiful sofa table. It has clearly been produced by one
of the top cabinet makers of the time, probably Gillows who
were known to be suppliers for the stamped retailer. Every
last detail has been painstakingly thought out and executed
from the beautiful satinwood inlaid decoration to the
exquisitely carved supports. It is a good bold size and would
be an exceptional addition to just about any location, in any
proporty.

Sofa Tables were of course relatively common throughout the
19th century, but not ones of this quality, and as the name suggests
they were originally designed to be positioned behind a sofa, although
a common misconception is that they were always meant to butt up
against the sofa. Actually they were often designed to sit a few feet
away from the sofa, hence the false drawers on reverse. That
said they also look quite happy pushed right up against the
back of a sofa course and are such useful, versatile
items of furniture)
