Object Description

A fine quality early 19th century Regency – George IV period library armchair, in dense solid mahogany, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London.
English, circa 1820.

Why we like it

This classic Gillows bergere features a reeded and curved back, along with the typical Gillows reeded leg. Made of fine quality mahogany throughout, which has patinated to a pleasing warm colour. Its austere, unembellished masculine design makes it a perfect gentleman’s library armchair. The reeded front legs on brass castors and similarly reeded arm supports can be found on other examples of the Gillows output from early 19th century, of which we sold a few.

Superb quality, newly re-caned.

Established in the early 18th century, Gillows of Lancaster are among the few most celebrated English furniture makers, famed for their use of fine timbers and exceptional quality of craftsmanship.

Object Condition

Frame in original antique condition, newly re-caned. New leather squab cushions.
