Object Description

A Very Good Quality Regency Period Mahogany Wine Cooler, Of Open Form, Having Ebonised Greek Key Inlaid Decoration And Wonderful Original Brass Lions Mask Carrying Handles, Housed On Original Stand With Elegant Turned Tapering Legs Retaining Original Brass Castors.

Wine Coolers & Cellarettes are generally regarded as the same thing, made to serve the same purpose, which is to house the wine in the dining room before and during meal times once it has been brought up from the cellar. All of the grandest houses would have had at least a couple of these items and the grander the house, the bigger the status symbol when entertaining guests of course.

It’s quite difficult to find good quality antique wine coolers like this which retain their original stands as many of them have been removed and placed on dining tables etc over the years. Only for the stand to disappear into a different room or storage area, never to be seen again.

So the fact that it retains its original stand is of course a most highly desirable feature. The stand itself is very elegant and even retains its original brass castors.

The interior lining of the actual cooler is not original. It would have been lead, or zinc, originally and is now replaced by a form of vinyl, but we are unsure exactly what material it is.

Certainly, however, this lining would be sufficient to use the piece for displaying flowers, plants or similar.

Should one wish to revert back to the items original purpose it shouldn’t be too difficult to have a metal liner custom made to slip inside it.
