Object Description

Fine Regency period mahogany two-tier table, of exceptional quality, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London,
English, circa 1820.

The two circular revolving tiers on a turned, gadrooned and flower-carved column, raised on a tripod base with wheat-carved sabre legs, terminating in original brass capped castors. A superbly versatile piece, ideal as a drinks table / bar trolley, or can be used as a lamp or sofa end table.

The present piece’s design is invariably associated with the London and Lancaster firm of Gillows. A closely related design appears in the Gillows’ Estimate Sketch books (Westminster City Archives) in 1826 (No.3556) supplied to Ferguson and Co. for Barton J., Esq., and in 1830, supplied to Mr. Bastard (No.3962). The superb construction and choice of timbers are also typical of Gillows.

A matched pair of closely related tables, attributed to Gillows, sold Christie’s, London, 11 February 1999, Lot 28; and a further related example sold at Bonhams, London, 16 July 2008, Lot 158.
