Object Description
Circa 1820
A superb and rare Regency Period gilt tooled red leather bound lady’s compendium box, the hinged pagoda shaped lid with a fitted mirror above two doors with gilt brass appliques opening on four faux book drawers the bottom one fitted as a writing slope and the whole raised on gilt brass feet, the sides with gilt brass carrying handles.
This box is typical of the items produced during the first quarter of the 19th Century when there was great interest in all things Eastern, particularly with the Prince Regent’s Brighton Pavilion providing a showcase. When this was made, it would have been an expensive item and may well have been a gift to a spouse or daughter.
