Object Description

House and church Sampler, 1817, by Isabella Atkinson Aged 9. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering floral border. Colours black, red, yellow, copper, white, pink, blue and green. Verse reads, ‘My soul before thy MAKER bow > His wondrous works admire > Till revrence and religious awe > Thine inmost thoughts inspire > Without reserve to him submit > All his commands fulfil > Acknowledge all his actions fit > Nor ere oppose his will’. Signed and dated ‘Isabella Atkinson Aged 9 Years Her Work 1817’. A wonderful set of motifs including a house with a garden leading to a church. Animals on the grass. Blossoming trees, birds, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets and butterflies. Framed in an old ‘molded composition over wood’ frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Object Condition

Very Good. No holes. A few light patchy stains around the border. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
