Object Description

A Delightful & Very Good Quality Regency Period Rosewood
Boat Shaped Canterbury Having Pierced Carrying Handle And
Turned Upright Supports Over One Frieze Drawer Raised On
Elegant Turned Legs & Original Brass Castors

(Legend has it that canterburies are named such as the first object of
this design was commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the
late 18th century. Although the original format is believed to have had
dividers in both directions with the purpose of holding cutlery for the
dining room, things soon progressed and they started being used mainly
for sheet music storage. These days of course a Canterbury makes the
perfect vehicle for storing newspapers and magazines in. This particularly
nice example is excellent quality and has real elegance to it and unusual
being constructed from Rosewood. It is much more common to find
Canterburies made from Mahogany especially in the early part of
the 19th Century. Another sign of quality is the mahogany lined drawer and
the elegant shape plus carrying handle. It also stands on its
original brass castors.)
