Object Description

A fine mahogany bracket clock from the Regency era by Barrauds, London.

The 8-day twin fusee movement strikes on a bell. Both the backplate and pendulum disc have an engraved border which continues over the backcock and movement clamps. It is signed Barrauds, Cornhill, London. The strike function has a trip repeat lever.

The completely original and evenly faded painted arched dial with strike/silent indicator, is again signed for Barrauds, with gilt spade hands.

The arch-top case has well-figured mahogany veneers, with the door edged in brass. The sides display rectangular, material-backed fish-scale brass frets. All mounted on brass bracket feet.

The Barrauds family were prolific clock & watchmakers, particularly specialising in chronometers. Paul Philip Barraud was Master of the Clockmakers Company in 1810 & 1811. He died in 1820. His sons Frederick Joseph (free 1806), John (free 1813) and James (free 1815) continued the family business and their clocks were signed Barraud & Sons after 1813. As this clock is in the (plural) family name, this clock probably dates between 1806 and 1813.
