Object Description

Regency period woolwork embroidered picture of a deer in a country scene. The embroidery is worked in wool on a canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Pictorial scene depicts a recumbent deer in front of trees. Set in a country landscape. Unusually, the embroidery is signed and dated. The signature is stitched on silk backing, below the main subject and reads, ‘Mary Clark Mountsorrell 1826’. Mountsorrell is a village in Leicestershire, England, on the River Soar. Framed in an old ‘molded composition over wood’ frame with glass. Mounting: The embroidery is tacked to a wood stretcher frame and backed with wooden board.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Object Condition

Good. A few small holes, mainly to the silk at the bottom. A slight patch of staining at the top above the tree. Frame with retouched colour in corners.
