Object Description
Restauration gilt bronze mounted crystal lyre mantel clock
French, c. 1820
Height 67cm, width 23cm, depth 14cm
This superb mantel clock takes the form of a classical lyre. The clock, which is crafted from cut crystal mounted with gilt bronze, is a wonderful example of Restauration period design. The glass throughout is beautifully cut and faceted, and the apparatus of the clock nestles neatly into the form: the dial situated between the lyre arms, for instance. The clock is surmounted by elaborate gilt bronze swan necks and a cut crystal pendant of a classical male profile bust. The gilt bronze throughout furthers the classical theme, with acanthus leaves and other classicising motifs predominating.
The reverse of the pendant is signed ‘Desprez / Rue des Récolets / Paris’.
