Object Description
This large and impressive clock garniture set consists of a central clock and a pair of flanking vases. The three pieces are extremely finely decorated with painted cartouches of flying putti, fetes galantes, and floral motifs, on a Sevres cobalt-blue ground with parcel gilt detailing.
The central clock takes the form of a vase, mounted onto a gilt bronze plinth. The plinth is decorated with trumpet-blowing putti with scrolling tails, as well as other floral and foliate motifs. The porcelain clock dial is set into the centre of the body of the vase, and is itself decorated with a putto and a quiver of arrows. It bears the signature for the clock’s retailer, ‘CAMERDEN & FORSTER / NEW-YORK’.
Each of the three pieces is mounted at either side with twin handles in the form of rams’ heads (on the central clock) and Classical masks (on the flanking vases). The flanking vases’ painted cartouches are inscribed ‘A Baret’, the signature for the porcelain decorator. The central vase is surmounted by a gilt bronze winged putto holding a bow. The dimensions of the garniture set are as follows:
Clock: height 66cm, width 38.5cm, depth 24cm
Vases: height 42cm, width 26cm, depth 23cm
