Object Description

A very fine Roman jug mould blown from translucent aubergine glass. The vessel features a piriform body which narrows to a cylindrical neck with an out-splayed mouth and folded rim. A single handle in green glass has been applied from the shoulder to the rim. A green glass band has also been tooled around the lower neck. The jug is further enriched with diagonal ribs across the body. The vessel is perched on a ring foot and displays vibrant blue iridescence and encrustation to the surface.

Date: Circa 4th-5th century AD

Ex S.M. Collection, London, Mayfair, acquired 1970s-90s.

Object Condition

Very fine condition, encrustation and iridescence to the lower section.
