Roman Aubergine Glass Perfume Bottle

Object Description

An extremely fine Roman perfume bottle blown from aubergine glass. The vessel features a bulbous body which tapers in at the shoulder to a cylindrical neck. The mouth is out-splayed with a folded rim. The bottle is enriched with white trailing which has been drawn and tooled around the vessel to create a spiral effect.

Date: Circa 1st – 2nd century AD

Object History

Property of a London gentleman, previously in a private collection of a Kensington collection. Acquired from Mrs Petra Schamelman, Breitenbach, Germany, previously from a collection of Fernand Adda, formed in the 1920s-1930s.

Object Condition

Excellent condition, stunning iridescence to the surface along with some encrustation.
