Object Description

A Late Roman bronze attachment, most likely a belt-buckle. The attachment displays a semi-oval shape adorned with a central stylised combat scene. A gladiator, visible to the left, is shown in an attacking position holding a spear horizontally in his right hand with his left arm raised. The figure is advancing towards an animal, likely a lion with its head slightly lowered and its tail raised above the body. The scene is framed by two ridges. A small protrusion features at the tip of the curve while two pierced lugs are displayed at the other end for attaching, which are now blocked. The reverse also features a further three pierced lugs with one being blocked. Some patination and encrustation are visible to the surface.

Date: Circa 5th century AD
