Object Description

A finely cast Roman bronze skeuomorphic brooch in the shape of a double-bladed axe. Matching crescentic axe blades, the terminals of which are rounded and curled over, emerge from either side of the central pole, creating a symmetric form. The central pole displays flared ends, and has been enriched with two raised ridges along its length. A small conical finial surmounts the pole and a long shaft extends from its base; however, part of the shaft is now missing. The reverse displays the original hinge and pin, which sits within the transverse catch-plate.

Date: Circa 2nd-3rd century AD
