Object Description

A Roman, bronze, crossbow fibula featuring a thick, semi-circular, arched bow and a decorated, flattened foot. The sides of the bow are smooth and terminate in a small ridged ring. The footplate features two sloped, smooth edges with slight ridges at either end. The longitudinal arms are hexagonal in shape and terminate in hexagonal, onion-shaped nodules with a third nodule raised to the height of the bow. The arms also feature applied, hatched rings that sit beneath each knob. The well-preserved, original pin extends from the footplate towards the catch plate.

Date: Circa 3rd – 4th century AD

Ex Wiltshire collection of brooches and militaria, acquired 1980s-2000s.

Object Condition

Very fine condition. Original pin still in place.
