Object Description
An ancient Roman phallic amulet, made of bronze. The elongated amulet depicts a tapering phallus at one end and a stylised, clenched fist at the other. They meet in the middle, where a large suspension loop sits at the top. Two rounded protrusions sit just behind the suspension loop, possibly depicting testes or wings. This particular amulet is rather unique, as the style, which depicts both an erect phallus and the clenched fist making the ‘manus fica’ gesture, did not usually meet in such a way. Instead, amulets with both motifs would meet at a central pubis or scrotum.
